Atlantis has conjured up many different ideas and images since Plato who wrote the criteria and Timeaus. Plato suggested that the legend of the lost civilisation was first discovered by Solon who was the law-giver to the Sais in Egypt. An ancient priest deciphered script which spoke of a large land mass or continent, which had been destroyed because of its lack of respect to god.

The arguments for this lost island occupied every age and still comes up today based on geology and diffusion of cultures. Some scientists believe that it was part of the large land mass that there when earth was evolving. The map of the world looked very different from now 250 million years ago, when drifting plates brought ancient land masses together to form one huge super-continent called Pangaea. This join was completed 200 million years ago, but 20 million years later this super-continent began to fragment to break up into continents. In the last 100 million years these continents have slowly drifted to be at their current positions. As the landmasses moved apart new ocean basins were created. Older rocks are often destroyed at the subduction zones where plates are pushed downwards into upper mantle and melted. Could this be what happened to Atlantis, destroyed as the earth changed its shape. No remains of any large mass of land in the Atlantic sea had been found but is this any proof that it didn’t exist.

What were these people of Atlantis like if the myth is true, one of many ideas that has been said many times and portrayed in films, the lots of things, it is the suggested that these Atlanteans had. highly developed technology and the ability to harness the power of the sun and create rays of light like our lasers are today. This is all conjecture as anything of this kind. I personally think that the idea of Atlantis is possible along with their being highly developed - for instance look at the Mayans and the Egyptians with their very complicated buildings and structures.

One hypothesis is that this lost island was inhabited by beings not from earth originally, galactic refugees looking for somewhere, but along with Atlantis they were destroyed by sudden natural events or otherwise.

Other twists on this could also be suggested, these beings were so highly developed that they eventually left this planet to go elsewhere. Could they have been humans in touch with aliens that visited them, and they knew something was imminent so were offered a lift as it were, via their alien allies. Too unbelievable - or is it - look at the Mayans and Egyptians again. They show in their ancient drawings glowing "chariots in the sky". Could even all these civilisations, the Mayan, Egyptians and the Atlanteans be connected in an extraterrestrial way?

Edgar Cayle, the famous medium, made several statements about Atlantis - one being it would rise again. This could be taken metaphorically or quite literally. Atlantis remains our "terra incognita" to be explored mentally and, if possibly, physically.
